Square Enix: When Square Enix decided to remake a Square beloved classic from 1997, they consciously decided to infuse it with what they believe are the modern selling points for their big budget RPGs (movie like cinematics, photorealistic graphics, bigger scope, lifelike animations, action oriented combat system) and by doing so they completely overhaul the original game source material. The idea was that the FFVII remake games (multiple games based on one original game) would become somewhat of a comparable to the mainline series releases that would run in parallel to fill up the annual schedule (cause game development continue to become longer and longer). When Nintendo decided to remake a Square-developed beloved classic from 1996, they consciously decided to trust the original game timelesssly qualities and partnered with ArtePiazza to develop a faithful remake. The scope of the remake of Super Mario RPG is that of a SNES RPG and the visual style is in tune with the original fantasy setting so even the graphics makeover is much much cheaper than what was done for FFVII remake. At the base there are fundamentally different beliefs in how to make money.
